Netherlands has busiest railway network in the EU
The Dutch railway network is the busiest in the European Union. The Netherlands is the only country to realise a traffic performance of more than 20 thousand train kilometres – twice the EU average – per kilometre of track in 2006. With 18 thousand train kilometres per kilometre of track, Austria came second.
Train kilometres include passenger as well as freight trains. With 92 percent, the Dutch share of passenger train kilometres in the total number of train kilometres is considerably above the EU average of 79 percent.
