420 businesses and institutions bankrupt in December
In December last year, 420 businesses and institutions (excluding one-man businesses) were declared bankrupt in the Netherlands, i.e. 9 more than in November 2008 and 190 more than in December 2007.
As the number of businesses declared bankrupt in a particular month is closely related to the number of days courts are in session, it may vary strongly from month to month. Therefore, the three-monthly moving average is a more reliable indicator.
The three-monthly moving average stood at 391 in December, as against 364 in November. In May 2008, the indicator reached its lowest level in seven years. Since then, is has risen continuously.
