Significant increase generation of electricity in horticulture under glass
In the first three quarters of 2008, decentralised generation of electricity increased by 14 percent relative to the same period one year previously. In 2007, the increase was 10 percent. Centralised generation of electricity in large power stations hardly changed in 2008. The overall amount of electricity generated in the first three quarters of last year grew by more than 3 percent.
The generation of electricity in horticulture under glass rose sharply. The large-scale introduction of gas engines in greenhouses for generation of electricity and heat contributed to the increase. High energy prices in recent years made small-scale generation of electricity a profitable business. The generation capacity in this sector has doubled in the span of two years. Early 2008, horticulture under glass accounted for more than 10 percent of total electrical capacity in the Netherlands.
