Strong increase in mental health care
More and more people in the Netherlands are making use of mental health care. The volume of mental health care rose by an average 6.4 percent per year from 2000 to 2007. This is around 3 percentage points more than the average annual volume increase in total health and social care. Outpatient care in particular has grown substantially: by 14 percent on average. For inpatient and part-time treatment, the annual volume increase was an average 3 percent per year.
Spending on mental health care rose from 2.6 billion euro in 2000 to 2.4 billion euro in 2007. This is the equivalent of an increase from 162 euro to 275 euro for each person in the Dutch population.
