Exceptions
Since 1 October 1997, naturalisation implies that people relinquish their original nationality, but there are exceptions to this rule. The complete list of exceptions was published in the Staatscourant (Government Gazette) of 10 July 1997.
Various examples age given below:
• the petitioner possesses the nationality of a country that does not allow its citizens to relinquish their nationality (e.g. Algeria, Argentina, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia)
• the petitioner was born in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is a resident of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba during the application procedure
• the petitioner is a minor
• the petitioner is married to or has a registered partnership with a Dutch national
• the petitioner has a refugee status officially recognised by the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba.
