Sunday recreational drives
The average distance covered by car on Sundays is 190 kilometres, as against 270 kilometres on weekdays, hence the Dutch roads are quieter on Sundays, but the car occupancy rate is higher.
Travel behaviour on Sundays varies from that on weekdays for two reasons. Firstly, cars are not used for commuting, going to school or shopping on Sundays, but for visiting friends and relatives and for recreational purposes. Secondly, the car occupancy rate is higher on Sundays. On weekdays, the number of car drivers is more than twice as high as the number of car passengers, whereas on Sundays, the driver/passenger ratio is approximately fifty-fifty.
