Number of bankruptcies substantially down
In May 2008, 228 businesses and institutions (excluding one-man businesses) were declared bankrupt in the Netherlands. The number was nearly 90 down on the previous month. The number of bankruptcies also fell sharply relative to May 2007.Nearly 100 fewer businesses and institutions went bankrupt than in May 2007.
As the number of businesses declared bankrupt in a particular month is closely related to the number of days courts are in session, it may vary strongly from month to month. Therefore, the three-monthly moving average is a more reliable indicator.
The three-monthly moving average stood at 268 in May, more than 20 down on April. It reached the lowest point in 7 years.
