Greenhouse vegetables mainly exported
Last year, 4.4 billion kg of vegetables were harvested in the Netherlands. More than 35 percent of the total vegetable crop consists of greenhouse vegetables (cucumbers, bell peppers and tomatoes). Onions account for one quarter. Approximately 85 percent of crops grown under glass and 70 percent of onions are exported; 35 percent of other vegetables are directly exported.
Most manually harvested vegetables like cabbage and leafy vegetables are mostly sold fresh in the Netherlands. Mechanically harvested vegetables, for example peas, beans and carrots are sold directly to Dutch consumers, but also canned or processed to fodder.
