Utilisation rate
As the railways are used by both passenger trains and goods trains, there are two utilisation rates:
Passenger-kilometres (passenger transport) per kilometre of rail track:
The definition passenger-kilometre is the uniform unit of measurement for the volume of passenger transport; it equals the transport of one person over a distance of one kilometre.
For example:
100 passengers each travel 30 kilometres by train = 3,000 passenger-km.
Length of the railway system = 10 km
The utilisation rate is then 300 passenger-km per km of rail track.
Tonne-kilometres (goods transport) per kilometre of rail track:
The definition of freight-tonne-kilometre is the uniform unit of measurement for the volume of goods transport; it equals the transport of one tonne of freight over a distance of one kilometre.
