Harmonised indices were introduced to facilitate comparison between the inflation rates of the various member states of the European Union. Apart from the CPI, Statistics Netherlands regularly publishes the HICP (Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices). The main difference between the national CPI and the HICP is the composition of the basket of goods and services which both indices are based upon. Inflation is measured as the increase of the consumer price index relative to the same period one year previously.
