Consumer price index
Statistics Netherlands’ consumer price index (CPI) shows the average change in the price of goods and services purchased by households. The index refers to all households.
The package of goods and services covered by the CPI includes food, durable goods such as household appliances and cars, energy and housing services (rent) and a number of public services. It also includes consumption-related taxes, including motor vehicle tax and municipal taxes such as sewerage charges. Basic health insurance is not included in the CPI, but supplementary insurance for medical costs is.
Inflation is defined as the increase in the CPI compared with the same period in the previous year.
