Renewable electricity
Renewable electricity is generated by wind power, hydropower, solar power and biomass. Usually, renewable electricity is expressed in terms of the net domestic, renewable electricity output as a percentage of total domestic electricity consumption (Protocol Monitoring Renewable Energy, SenterNovem 2006).
The Dutch government endeavours to generate 9 percent of total electricity consumption from renewable sources in 2010. The Netherlands has also committed itself to this goal on a European level. Import of electricity only counts, if the exporting country explicitly agrees and subtracts the amount of electricity exported from the amount of renewable electricity it has generated. So far, the Netherlands has not made any agreements with respect to imports of renewable electricity.
