Two types of programme are distinguished in higher education, i.e. short and long programmes. Short programmes are two-year programmes and are mainly occupation-oriented. Long programmes last at least three years (bachelor’s and master’s degrees) and are generally speaking more theoretical. In the Netherlands these are higher professional education (hbo) and university education (wo).
