Since a court judgment of 17 May 1990 (the Barber-arrest), differences between the sexes in regulations concerning pensions and remuneration are forbidden. Moreover, a law came into effect in 1994 prohibiting the exclusion of part-time employees from pension schemes, and prescribing that part-time employees build up the same pension entitlements (proportionately) as full-time employees. The latter resulted in a great improvement for the situation of women, as more women than men work part-time.
