Twice as many women fire fighters
The number of women fire fighters has more than doubled to 1,500 in the period 2000-2007. The number of female professional fire fighters rose from 145 to 313, the number of women volunteer fire fighters rose from 600 to 1.2 thousand. Yet, the fire fighters’ world remains dominated by men. Only six in every one hundred fire brigade personnel are women. Another striking development is that over the period 2000-2007, the number of professional fire fighters rose by 14 percent and the number of volunteer fire fighters declined by 2 percent.
