7.2 million households
There were nearly 7.2 million households in the Netherlands on 1 January 2007. The number of households has increased by more than 600 thousand in the space of ten years. A large part of this increase was caused by single households: their number increased by 380 thousand to over 2.5 million.
The number of couples with children was nearly 2.1 million on 1 January 2007. This is around the same number as ten years ago. The number of married couples with children fell by 185 thousand to under 1.8 million, the number of unmarried couples with children rose by 160 thousand to 280 thousand.
The number of couples without children rose by 165 thousand to 2.1 million. This number is now the same as the number of couples with children. The number of single-parent households grew by nearly 90 thousand to about 460 thousand.
