Nearly 32 thousand divorces in 2006
Last year, 31.7 thousand marriages ended in divorce, approximately the same amount as in 2005. Additionally, 3.9 thousand married couples opted for dissolution of their marriage by means of a flash annulment procedure.
With 37 thousand, the number of divorces peaked in 2001. After introduction of the flash annulment procedure – also in 2001 – the number of divorces was reduced. The reduction was set off by the number of flash annulments. The total number of divorces plus flash annulments declined marginally in 2006.
Since 2003, between 31 and 32 thousand marriages were dissolved by divorce. This implies that 9 out of every 1 thousand married couples divorce each year. These marriage dissolutions annually involve about 33 thousand under age children.
