Medical end-of-life decision-making

In the survey of end-of-life decisions, the following medical end-of-life decisions are distinguished, from least intrusive to most intrusive:

• withholding or withdrawing treatment, taking account of the fact that this will probably hasten the patient’s death.;
• intensifying pain and/or symptom relief, taking into accounts that this will probably hasten the patient’s death;
• intensifying pain and/or symptom relief, partly with the purpose of hastening the patient’s death;
• withholding or withdrawing treatment, with the deliberate purpose of hastening the patient’s death;
• prescribing, providing or applying treatment with the deliberate purpose of hastening the patient’s death;

If the doctor indicated that he took more than one decision, the death is classified under the most intrusive decision.
