Friesland: grassland and lots of sheep
Approximately 40 percent of agricultural area in the Netherlands consists of grassland. In Friesland grassland makes up nearly 70 percent of the entire province. With 175 thousand hectares, Friesland is has the largest area of grassland.
Friesland also has the largest amount of sheep. There are nearly 1.4 million sheep in the Netherlands and more than 250 thousand (18 percent) are found in Friesland. Six municipalities situated in Friesland figure in the top ten of municipalities where most sheep are kept, i.e. Littenseradiel, Tytsjerksteradiel, Dongeradeel, Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland, Wunseradiel and Weststellingwerf. The municipalities of Texel, Steenwijkerland, Beemster and Eemsmond are also found in the top ten.
