Online saving increasingly popular

At the end of 2006, there were 5.3 million Internet savings accounts in the Netherlands. This is an increase by 0.7 million relative to 2005 and nearly twice as many as in 2003. The amount deposited in Internet savings accounts totalled 74 billion euro in 2006, an 11 percent increase compared to one year previously and more than one third of the total amount deposited in savings accounts in the Netherlands. The increased popularity of online saving has a negative effect on other savings methods like telephone savings accounts. Last year, the number of telephone savings accounts dropped under 3 million. The total amount deposited in telephone savings accounts declined from 19 to 17.5 billion euro.
