More manufactured cigarettes, fewer hand-rolled cigarettes smoked
The consumption of manufactured and hand-rolled cigarettes declined for twenty-five years, but rose again marginally in 2006. Collectively, the Dutch smoked approximately 25 billion manufactured and hand-rolled cigarettes last year, an increase by 1.5 percent on 2005. The increase is entirely attributable to an increase in the consumption of manufactured cigarettes. The per capita consumption in 2006 was 864 cigarettes, an increase by more than 4 percent on 2005, whereas the consumption of hand-rolled cigarettes was reduced by almost 2 percent to 667. The number of smokers in the Netherlands in 2006 hardly changed relative to 2005.
