Total vegetable crop tops three billion kg
In 2006 3.1 billion kg of vegetables were harvested in the Netherlands. This is the same amount as in 2005. Glasshouse vegetables accounted for 1.5 billion kg. These were mainly tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers. The nearly 1.6 billion kg of non-glasshouse vegetables harvested included 500 million kg of carrots and more than 200 million kg of mushrooms. Vegetable crops suffered from the hot July and wet August in 2006. More vegetables were sown and the mild autumn weather bumped up the winter crops.
For most vegetables crops were slightly down on 2005, but winter carrots, leeks and conical cabbage were more than 15 percent up.
