More cars run on diesel
Last year, 80 percent of passenger cars in the Netherlands ran on petrol, but the percentage of cars equipped with diesel engines has increased rapidly. Currently, 16.5 percent of cars have diesel engines, as opposed to 12.5 percent in 2000. The proportion of cars running on LPG is diminishing further; from 5 percent in 2000 to 3 percent in 2006.
Heavier cars more often have diesel engines. Almost 40 percent of cars whose weight exceeds 1,150 kg, run on diesel fuel. Nearly all light passenger cars in the weight class up to and including 850 kg run on petrol.
