The number of inhabitants in rural areas, on the other hand, fell from 6.6 million to 6.5 million, 40 percent of the population, in the same period. More and more people are living in densely populated areas.
In the provinces of South Holland and North Holland 66 and 63 percent of the population respectively live in an urban environment in 2006, in Drenthe this is just over 7 percent.
