Neighbourhoods
In 2005, the Netherlands was divided into 467 municipalities, 2,491 districts and 11,286 neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods may differ strongly in number of inhabitants and area. Rural neighbourhoods are often larger in terms of area and have a smaller population. In urban areas, on the other hand, the neighbourhoods are generally smaller and more densely populated. Neighbourhoods with the most inhabitants (e.g. Groot-IJsselmonde in Rotterdam with over 26 thousand inhabitants) even have more inhabitants than nearly 300 municipalities.
The analyses by age in this article refer to neighbourhoods with at least 50 inhabitants. On 1 January 2005 10,349 neighbourhoods satisfied this criterion. The population composition by sex and age is that on 1 January 2005 (Municipal population registration).
