Victims

A victim is a person against whom – on one or more occasions – a form of common crime has been committed in the twelve months prior to the date of the survey.

The data are based on the National Safety Monitor 2006, a large-scale survey among the population on victimisation, feelings of insecurity, problems in the neighbourhood and police performance. The survey is conducted by Statistics Netherlands in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and the Ministry of Justice. Over 20 thousand respondents were interviewed about the crime(s) they had experienced. The following types of crime are distinguished:
• sexual offences,
• physical abuse,
• threatening behaviour,
• (attempted) burglary,
• bicycle theft,
• car theft,
• theft from cars,
• wallet or purse theft involving violence,
• pickpocketing,
• other theft,
• car vandalism or theft from cars,
• other vandalism,
• other offences, not further specified.
These data are linked on a personal level to background data from registers or other sources. The data on victimisation may deviate from other publications in the National Safety Monitor. Car offences only refer to car users.
