Half of first formers still in education ten years later

About half of pupils who were in the first form of secondary education in 1993 were still in some form of education ten years later; the other half had moved on to the labour market.

The percentage of pupils still in education ten years after starting secondary education was highest for vwo first formers (the highest level of secondary education): around 70 percent. The lowest percentage still in education was for pupils in vbo (the lowest level of secondary education): around 40 percent.

Two out of five pupils in the first form of vwo are in university ten years later . This is considerably more than the number of pupils from the combined havo/vwo level first forms, of whom only one in five go on to university.

A large percentage of pupils from combined havo/vwo (havo is senior intermediate level secondary education) first forms have left education ten years on. Of those still in education. most (around 30 percent) attend a vocational college (hbo):.

Most pupils in a vbo first form are on the labour market ten years later. Those who are still in education are mostly in senior vocational education (mbo).

Full-time senior vocational education (mbo) most popular

A total of one in five pupils are in senior vocational education (mbo) after ten years. At this level of education, pupils can attend full-time or part-time. Overall, just under half of these pupils are in full-time senior vocational education.

Most of pupils from combined havo/vwo first forms in senior vocational education ten years later, are in full-time education: nearly seven out of ten. For pupils from mavo (junior intermediate level secondary education) and broader range combined mavo/havo/vwo first forms this is significantly lower: just over half these pupils are in full-time education ten years later.

Pupils in the first form of vbo were least likely still to be in full-time education ten years later: fewer than one in three; relatively most of these pupils are in part-time senior vocational education.
