Strong increase in construction turnover

In 2000 the construction industry realised a total turnover of 60 billion euros, 10% more than in 1999. All sectors in construction contributed to this strong growth.

Most of the turnover in the construction industry was generated by medium-sized companies. Large companies accounted for 38% of turnover, small ones 20%. Nine out of ten companies in this branch fall into the latter category.

The number of construction companies increased by 10% last year. On balance the number increased to just over 86,000, with the largest growth in the number of small construction companies. The increase in the number of medium-sized and large companies was mainly caused by the enlargement of existing companies.

Growth of installation companies lagging behind

Within the construction industry, the increase in turnover of companies providing installation on construction projects remains below average. Civil engineering companies did well, however, with a growth of 13%.
