Description topics

Medical contacts
Persons are asked if they had contact with their GP, specialist, dentist, dental hygienist, orthodontist, physiotherapist, exercise therapist, psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist, and if he or she is treated by alternative healer. Also, if there were hospital admissions or day care admissions, if people have home care and if they had care abroad. Most questions after medical contacts are asked to persons of all ages. Contacts that do not often occur in the case of children are posed from an older age.
Hospital admissions in last 12 months
Hospital admissions are divided into:
- day admissions (without overnight stay)
- admission with at least one overnight stay
Hospital admissions in connection with delivery or birth are excluded.
Admissions with overnight stays
Admissions in a hospital or a clinic for at least one night.

Percentage of persons in the population who at least once, at least one night, has been admitted in the hospital during the 12 months preceding the interview.
Overnight stays per patient
Average number of nights that patients stay in the hospital during the 12 months preceding the interview. This number is an estimation and is calculated by multiplying the number of times that a person stayed in the hospital one night or more with the number of nights that that person stayed in the hospital for the last time.
From 2021, questions about the number of times a person spent one night or more in hospital and the number of nights that person last spent in hospital are no longer included in the survey.

Admissions per 100 persons
The average number of admissions with at least 1 overnight stay in hospital per 100 persons during the 12 months preceding the interview. From 2021, the number of times a person has spent one night or more in hospital will no longer be asked.
Admissions per 100 patients
The average number of admissions with at least 1 overnight stay in hospital per 100 patients during the 12 months preceding the interview. Patients are persons who are admitted in the hospital at least once, for at least 1 night during 12 months preceding the interview.
From 2021, the number of times a person has spent one night or more in hospital will no longer be asked.
