Description topics

Perceived state of health
Figures refer to answers to the question:
‘How do you assess your general state of health?’
Very good/good
Percentage of persons of all ages who answered 'very good' or ‘good’ to the question concerning their general state of health.
Less than good
Percentage of persons of all ages who considered their general state of health: ‘acceptable’, ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’.
Generic health indicator, 12+ years
The generic health indicator consists of a summary measure (norm score) for physical health and a summary measure (norm score) for mental health. These norm scores are calculated for persons aged 12 years or older.
Figures refer to the so-called 'Short Format 12' (SF-12). This is a frequently used international standard which was developed in the United States by Ware et al. (1995).
Physical norm score
The physical norm score is calculated for persons aged 12 years or older. It is a summary measure for physical health based on replies to various questions in the so-called 'Short Format 12' (SF-12), developed in the United States by Ware et al. (1995). The average physical health of the American population is exactly 50. Average scores of below 50 indicate poorer physical health than the norm population (American population) and values above 50 indicate better physical health. The average physical health of the Dutch population is slightly above 50.
Mental norm score
The mental norm score is calculated for persons aged 12 years or older. It is a summary measure for mental health based on replies to various questions in the so-called 'Short Format 12' (SF-12), developed in the United States by Ware et al. (1995). The average mental health of the American population is exactly 50. Average scores of below 50 indicate poorer mental health than the norm population (American population) and values above 50 indicate better mental health. The average mental health of the Dutch population is slightly above 50.
Separate items of the health indicator
Percentages for the separate questions of the health indicator.
Limited in daily activities
Percentage of persons answering ‘severely’ or ‘slightly’ to the question:
