This table gives a monthly and quarterly overview of pronounced bankruptcies by legal form. Natural persons, with or without an single-owner company, can end in a bankruptcy or, since 1998, in a debt restructuring plan (not simultaneously), when they stop paying their debts. Legal persons can end in a bankruptcy via a suspension of payment, when they stop paying their debts.

Description topics

Pronounced bankruptcies
State declared by the court when a debtor has ceased all payments after
which the assets and income of the bankrupt are ceased as a possible
compensation to the creditor(s).
Total pronounced bankruptcies
Bankruptcies of legal persons
All kinds of legal persons such as: public cooperations, partnerships,
societies and foundations, Ltd, and other foreign legal persons.
If partnership firms or limited partnerships go bankrupt, the
participating partners will also be declared bankrupt.
Even though the bankruptcy is generally pronounced in one sentence, the
participating partners are counted separately in the relevant legal form.
Partners can be both natural persons and legal persons. Legal persons who
are partner of a bankrupt partnership firm of limited partnereship, are
included in the category 'Bankruptcies of legal persons'.
Natural persons who are partner are counted in the category 'Bankruptcies
of natural persons' > 'Without single-owner company'
Bankruptcies of natural persons
State declared by the court when a debtor has ceased all payments after
which the assets and income of the bankrupt are ceased as a possible
compensation to the creditor(s).
Total natural persons
Without single-owner company
Natural persons who don't own a company without separate capital.
It concerns "normal men or women" who got into trouble by private debts
and (unsuccessful) use of the law on debt restructuring.
Also included are partners, who are natural persons, of a bankrupt
partnership firm or limited partnership.
With single-owner company
Natural persons who have their own company or owned such a company
prior to their bankruptcy.
An own company is a company without separate capital. The natural
person is responsible for all actions and fortune matters of the company.
It is possible that more persons are employed within the company.
Since 1 January 2007, the CBS uses a new register of companies for
distinction of the legal form. Therefore, the distinction between
single-owner companies and natural persons can be made more exactly.
This results in a shift from single-owner companies to natural persons, in
comparison to former years.
