This table presents an overview on the types and use of swimming pools, indoor sports facilities and outdoor sports facilities. The figures are restricted to swimming pools and sports facilities operated by either local government or by commercial operators (private limited companies etc.) registered at the Chambers of Commerce as having the operation of swimming pools and/or sports facilities as their main activity.

Status of the figures: all figures are definite.

- Type of facility and visits
- Indoor sports facilities by type and the total number of visits per week of indoor sports facilities.
Reference week for the visits: a week in September.- Other indoor sports facilities
- A facility with one or more sports rooms (for example for bowling, squash, ice-skating or billiards), but without a small or large sports hall and without indoor tennis courts.
- Number of facilities
- Visits per week
- Total number of visits per week by people who practise a sport.
From 1997 onwards the figures only include facilities operated by
commercial operators.
- Specifically equipped sports rooms
- The courts and tables in sports rooms that are specifically equipped for just one type of sport.
- Other courts, tables, rooms
- Including the number of sports rooms specifically equipped for other sports than tennis, squash, skittles, bowling, table-tennis or billiards.
- Outdoor sports facilities
- Type of facility and visits
- Outdoor sports facilities by type and the total number of visits per week of outdoor sports facilities by people who practise a sport.
Reference week for the visits: a week in September.- Fac. for one other field game
- For instance a facility with only pitches for hockey or only pitches for
korfball.
- Fac. for field games and other sports
- For instance a facility with pitches for hockey and a speed skating track.
- Fac. for only other outdoor sports
- For instance a golf course.

- The pitches, tracks, courts, etc. on outdoor sports facilities that comply
with competition requirements.
Pitches, tracks, courts, etc. that can only be used for training purposes
