Description topics

Production and capacity utilisation
The development of production in the previous month compared with the
month before (realisation) and the anticipated development of production
in the subsequent three months. Seasonal effects are taken into account
by the respondents. Other indicators closely related to production are
utilisation, the (technical) production capacity and obstacles to
production. The answers are weighted according to the company's turnover
value.
Realisation production
Response percentages of the monthly question: 'Did the production last
month increase, remain the same or decrease compared with the month
before?'
Realisation remained the same
The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting that production
remained the same in the previous month compared with the month before.
The answers are weighted according to the company's turnover value.
Forecast production
Response percentages to the question: 'Do you expect production to
increase, decrease or remain the same in the next three months?'
Based on their expertise and information (e.g. order books), manufacturers
forecast the direction in which production will develop.
Forecast remain the same
Obstacles to production
Every last month in a quarter manufacturers indicate whether there are
bottlenecks in production, e.g. insufficient demand, insufficient
capacity, labour shortage.
Other Obstacles
For example, strikes, industrial action, sanctions. Up to and
including December 2002 lack of materials was included.
Orders
'Orders received' refers to the value of the orders received in the
previous month. Possible answers are: increased, remained the same
and decreased. Subsequently, the order position is established in
combination with the production, expressed in months of work. Orders
received and order position are referred to in terms of large, normal
and small for the time of year (see: 'evaluation'). Thus, seasonal
effects are taken into account. Orders include domestic as well as
foreign orders. Therefore, in addition to the total, several indicators
have been calculated for domestic and foreign order position and
orders received. The answers are weighted according to the company's
turnover value. Domestic orders received are weighted by domestic sales,
foreign orders received are weighted by foreign sales.
Orders received
Response percentages to the question: 'Compared with the month before,
has the value of orders received last month increased, remained
the same or decreased?'.
Received orders total
Orders received remained the same
Domestic orders
Domestic orders remained the same
Foreign orders
Foreign orders remained the same
Sales prices
Response percentages to the monthly question: "Will sales prices rise,
remain the same or fall in the next three months?"
The response is weighted according to the company's turnover value.
Sales prices remain the same
Competitive position
Figures available from March 1994.
Response percentages to the quarterly question: "Has the competitive '
position of the enterprise improved, remained the same or declined in
the last three months? The respondents are invited to make a distinction
between the domestic market, the foreign market inside the EU and the
foreign market outside the EU. Response is weighted by the domestic and
the (total) foreign sales value of the enterprise.
Dutch market
Competitive position remained the same
Inside the EU
Competitive position improved
Competitive position remained the same
Competitive position declined
Competitive position balance
The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting that their competitive
position on the foreign market inside the EU has improved in a particular
quarter minus the percentage reporting that their position has declined.
This balance reflects the development of the foreign competitive position
inside the EU in a particular quarter compared with the previous quarter.
Outside the EU
Competitive position improved
Competitive position remained the same
Competitive position declined
Competitive position balance
The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting that their competitive
position on the foreign market outside the EU has improved in a
particular quarter minus the percentage reporting that their position has
declined. This balance reflects the development of the foreign
competitive position outside the EU in a particular quarter compared with
the previous quarter.
Foreign sales
Response percentages to the quarterly question: "Will foreign sales
increase, remain the same or decrease in the next three months?"
The response is weighted to the company's turnover value.
Foreign sales remain the same
Number of employees
Response percentages to the question: "Will the number of employees
increase, remain the same or decrease in the next three months?"
The response is weighted by the number of employees of the enterprise. An
anticipated increase or decrease generates a question about the expected
increase or decrease percentage.
Until May 2002 this question was asked on a quarterly basis. The quarterly
figures from January 1995 to May 2002 are therefore converted by
interpolation into monthly figures.
Number of employees remain the same
Balances per indicator
This option allows a prompt selection of the balance per indicator without
having to choose between other results (large, small, increase and
decrease), incorporated in the balance. The balance is the difference
between the response percentages increased/large/improved and
decreased/small/declined.
Competitive position
Inside the EU
The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting the competitive
position on the foreign market inside the EU has improved in a particular
quarter minus the percentage reporting the position has declined.
This balance reflects the development of the foreign
competitive position inside the EU in a particular quarter compared with
the previous quarter.
Outside the EU
The weighted percentage of manufacturers reporting that the competitive
position on the foreign market outside the EU has improved in a
particular quarter minus the percentage reporting that the position has
declined. This balance reflects the development of the foreign
competitive position outside the EU in a particular quarter compared with
the previous quarter.
