- Total number of vehicles
- This section includes the categories of passenger cars, commercial vehicles (vans, trucks, tractors, special vehicles, buses, trailers) and motorcycles. From September 2003 all trailers are obliged to have a valid registration certificate.
Since 2004 these categories are included in the summaries of vehicle statistics.
- Total number of passenger cars
- Road motor vehicles, other than a moped or a motor cycle, intended for the carriage of passengers and designed to seat no more than nine persons (including the driver).
Included are:
a) Passenger cars
b) Vans designed and used primarily for transport of passengers
c) Taxis
d) Hire cars
e) Ambulances
f) Motor homes.
- Commercial vehicles
- Vehicles designed, exclusively or primarily, for the commercial transport of goods and passengers (for hire and reward).

- This section includes the category of commercial motor vehicles (vans, trucks, tractors, special vehicles, buses) and, starting from 2004, also including the categories of trailers and semi trailers.
- Commercial motor vehicles
- Motor vehicles designed, exclusively or primarily, for the commercial
transport of goods and passengers (for hire and reward), trailers and
semi-trailers are not included.- Total commercial motor vehicles
- This section covers the category of commercial motor vehicles (all types of vehicles) except trailers and semi-trailers.
- Vans
- Rigid road motor vehicles designed exclusively or primarily to carry goods, with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 3,500 kg.
- Lorries
- Rigid road motor vehicles designed exclusively or primarily to carry goods, with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 3,500 kg.
- Road tractors
- Road motor vehicles (articulated vehicles) designed exclusively or primarily to haul other vehicles which are not power driven (semi trailers). Agricultural tractors are excluded.
- Special purpose vehicles
- Road motor vehicle designed for purposes other than the carriage of passengers or goods.
This category includes:
a) Fire brigade vehicles
b) Mobile cranes
c) Self-propelled rollers
d) Bulldozers with metallic wheels or track
e) Vehicles for recording fi lm, radio and TV broadcasting
f) Mobile library vehicles
g) Towing vehicles for vehicles in need of repair
h) Other special purpose road motor vehicles.
- Buses
- Motor vehicles equipped for transporting nine or more passengers (excl. driver).
- Total number of motorcycles
- Motor vehicle on two or three wheels, with or without sidecar, fitted with a combustion engine with a cylinder capacity of 50 cubic centimetres or more.
- Passenger cars
- Road motor vehicles, other than a moped or a motor cycle, intended for the carriage of passengers and designed to seat no more than nine persons (including the driver).
Included are:
a) Passenger cars
b) Vans designed and used primarily for transport of passengers
c) Taxis
d) Hire cars
e) Ambulances
f) Motor homes.- By type of ownership
- Number of cars by type of owner, i.e. natural (private) persons or
legal persons (commercial enterprises and institutions).- Commercial vehicles
