In the Netherlands, inflation is measured as the increase in the consumer price index compared with the same period in the previous year. On the basis of studies on spending patterns of Dutch households, Statistics Netherlands has complied a ‘shopping basket’ whose contents correspond with the items (goods and services) on which households spend their money. The price of this basket is measured every month, and compared with price of the basket in the base year. This comparison serves as the basis for the consumer price index.
