Why is SBI being revised?

The world is constantly changing. As a result, the work we do and the importance we attach to it also change. To maintain an accurate overview of the economy, the European classification system known as NACE has to be updated regularly. This currently takes place around once every 15 years. When changes are made to NACE, SBI also needs to be revised.

This was last done in 2008. Since then, economic activities such as comparison websites and alternative energy providers have gained significant ground. Meanwhile a number of economic activities have practically ceased to exist, one example being video rental stores.

If developments in the Dutch economy warrant it, the structure of SBI is revised at the fifth level (‘the Dutch level’). At most, this is done once a year in January and results in a new annual version.
