Turnover volume sector hotels and restaurants marginally down

• Sales restaurants suffer setback
• Snack bars and pubs also face turnover losses
• Highest turnover growth for hotels

Turnover of the sector hotels and restaurantshoreca increased by 2.7 percent in the first quarter of 2008 relative to the same period last year, but the volume of turnover declined by 0.4 percent. For the third quarter running, turnover volume decreased marginally. Prices rose by 3 percent in the first quarter. Hotels achieved far better results than other branches in the sector, as the latest figures released by Statistics Netherlands show.

Turnover of restaurants dropped in the first quarter. Turnover volume fell 2.3 percent. Restaurants realised a modest turnover growth of 0.8 percent, because prices rose by 3.2 percent.

Snack bar sales also dropped in the first quarter of 2008.
Turnover volume declined 1.4 percent, prices rose 3.6 percent, resulting in a 2 percent turnover growth. With a 2 percent turnover growth, pubs also underachieved. Adjusted for the price increase of 3.2 percent, pubs faced a decrease in volume of 1 percent.

Hotels made the most substantial contribution to turnover growth in the sector hotels and restaurants. Turnover grew by over 6 percent relative to one year previously, maintaining the high level of 2007.
