Record turnover for hotels and restaurants sector

In the first quarter of 2007, turnover in the sector hotels and restaurants improved 9 percent relative to the same period last year. Prices rose by 3.4 percent. This turnover increase was the highest of the past decade. Hotels and cafeterias were the main contributors to the turnover growth in their sector, as provisional figures published by Statistics Netherlands show.

Turnover hotels nearly 12 percent higher

Hotels, including boarding houses and conference centres, have every reason to be pleased about the first quarter results. Turnover increased by nearly 12 percent, compared to last year’s first quarter. Hotels benefited from the increase in business spending. The thriving economy also had a positive effect on restaurants. Turnover in restaurants rose by 9.5 percent relative to the first quarter of 2006, prices rose by 2.8 percent.

11 percent turnover increase for cafeterias

Cafeterias continued the upward trend which was set in from the second quarter of 2006 onwards. Turnover of cafeterias grew by 11.3 percent in the first quarter of 2007. Caferteria prices went up by 3.7 percent. Cafeterias had to cope with considerably higher potato prices. With a 4 percent turnover increase, pubs performed rather poorly in comparison to other branches in the sector. Corrected for the price increase of 3.6 percent, volume growth was modest.
