NA/87 Chain indices in the national accounts: the Dutch experience

Boer, Sake de, Jan van Dalen and Piet Verbiest (1997).In this paper we discuss the use of chain indices in the Netherlands. In Dutch practice chain indices are applied from 1980 onwards. Chain indices are a good base for the construction of economic models, since changing weights guarantee a near approximation of actual developments and the actual economic structure. However, special attention should be paid to the tuning of the model to the characteristics of the data and to the presentation of model results to the public.
