Cost of CO2 emissions

Within the EU, emitters must obtain the relevant rights in order to emit greenhouse gases such as CO2. These emission rights can be bought and sold on the market (known as emissions trading). This results in a market price for the emission of greenhouse gases.

The total number of rights available is reduced every year, ensuring that total greenhouse gas emissions are also reduced as inexpensively as possible.
