Turnover accommodation and food services up by 4.5 percent in Q2

Seasonally adjusted turnover in the accommodation and food services sector rose by 4.5 percent in Q2 2023 relative to Q1 2023, as reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The volume of sales (turnover adjusted for price changes) increased by over 3 percent. Turnover rose by 5.5 percent in accommodation services and by 4.1 percent among food and beverage outlets.

Turnover hotels again recorded the strongest growth

Seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation services, including hotels and holiday parks, rose by 5.5 percent in Q2 2023 relative to the previous quarter. Hotels generated 6.7 percent more turnover than in Q1 and, as a result, recorded the strongest growth in the accommodation and food services sector. Other accommodation services such as holiday parks generated 2.4 percent more turnover. The volume of sales (turnover adjusted for price changes) in accommodation services increased by 5.8 percent.

In Q2, turnover of food and beverage outlets (seasonally adjusted) increased by 4.1 percent compared to the previous quarter. Canteens and catering achieved 6.6 percent more turnover. Cafés and restaurants recorded an increase of 6.2 and 5.0 percent respectively. Fast-food restaurants (including snack bars and cafeterias) were the only industry to record a decrease (-0.3 percent). The volume of sales for food and beverage outlets rose by 2.4 percent.

Turnover in accommodation and food services up by nearly 11 percent in Q2 year on year

The accommodation and food services sector achieved 10.9 percent higher turnover in Q2 than in the same quarter of 2022. Year on year, turnover has increased (substantially) in each quarter since Q2 2021.

In Q2, hotels recorded the largest turnover increase across the accommodation and food services sector at more than 18 percent. Holiday park rental companies and campsites recorded a turnover increase of 6.1 percent relative to Q2 2022.

Canteens and catering companies generated over 17 percent more turnover compared to one year previously. Fast-food restaurants recorded a year-on-year turnover increase of 9.5 percent. Restaurants achieved almost 9 percent more turnover year on year. The turnover increase at cafés amounted to over 4 percent.

Sentiment among hotel and catering entrepreneurs deteriorated

At the beginning of Q2 2023, entrepreneurial confidence in accommodation and food services decreased to -10.8. Entrepreneurs in this sector were more negative about both the economic climate in the past three months and the economic climate for the next three months. In almost all Dutch sectors, business confidence was negative at the start of Q3.
