Dutch consumers equally negative in July

In July 2023, the mood among consumers remained unchanged compared to the previous month, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Consumer confidence stood at -39, just as in June. Both opinions on the economic climate and opinions on willingness to buy did not change. Consumers have been continuously negative for 4 years.

At -39, the consumer confidence indicator in July is positioned well below its long-term average over the past two decades (-10). The indicator reached an all-time high (36) in January 2000 while the all-time low (-59) was reached in September and October 2022. CBS has monitored consumer confidence since April 1986.

Consumers remain pessimistic about the economy

Consumers were just as pessimistic about the economic climate in July as they were in June. This component indicator remained at -54. Consumers' opinions about the economic situation in the next twelve months were somewhat more negative, while their opinions about the economic situation in the past twelve months were slightly less negative.

Willingness to buy equally negative

Consumers’ willingness to buy in July also remained at -29. Opinions about the financial situation in the past twelve months were slightly less negative, while opinions about the financial situation in the next twelve months remained virtually the same as in June. Consumers were slightly more negative about making large purchases in July than they were in June.
