2018 EU Renewable Energy Directive

On 1 July 2021, the 2018 EU Renewable Energy Directive entered into force. All EU member states follow this directive to determine their share of renewable energy. The directive contains new sustainability criteria for solid biomass and biogas. These criteria apply to specific biomass installations.
Another new element of the revised renewable energy directive is renewable cooling. At the end of 2021, the European Commission indicated in a delegated regulation how this should be defined and calculated. Here, renewable cooling is defined as free cooling (e.g. using cold groundwater in a thermal energy storage system) and efficient air conditioning. However, CBS has not yet had time to implement this, which is why renewable cooling has not yet been incorporated in the figures.
