Excess mortality in November lower than in October

In week 48 (28 November to 4 December 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,400. This is slightly more than in the previous week (3,365), resulting in excess mortality. Over the whole month of November, there were 1,400 (10 percent) more deaths than expected, with excess mortality in four of the five weeks. Mortality was up among 65 to 79-year-olds in particular. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

November’s mortality figures cover five weeks, i.e. week 44 to 48 (31 October to 4 December 2022) inclusive. In four of the five weeks, mortality was higher than expected and fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. Excess mortality was recorded in all weeks of October. Each week of that month had nearly 450 more deaths than expected on average; in November, this number had decreased to almost 300 excess deaths per week.

Mortality among long-term care users and rest of population higher than expected

In week 48, mortality declined slightly compared to the previous week among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, mortality increased slightly, based on the estimate. There were nearly 1,300 deaths among long-term care recipients and over 2,100 among the rest of the population. This was more than expected for both groups and for the first time resulted in excess mortality among the rest of the population in week 48.

In the whole month of November, 700 more deaths than expected were recorded among long-term care recipients. There was excess mortality in two of the five weeks of November, with nearly 13 percent more deaths than expected. Among the rest of the population, there were also around 700 excess deaths in November. Mortality did fall within the interval of usual fluctuations, except for the last week of November, and was nearly 8 percent higher than expected.

Sustained excess mortality among 65 to 79-year-olds in November

At nearly 1,900, the estimated number of deaths among people aged 80 and over in week 48 was about the same as in the preceding week. This is almost 200 more than expected for this period, but there was no excess mortality. In the whole month of November, over 700 more deaths than expected were recorded among the over-80s. However, there was no excess mortality in this age group, except for week 47. Mortality was 9 percent higher than expected.

Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 1,100 deaths were recorded in week 48, around 135 more than expected. An estimated 570 excess deaths were recorded among this group over the whole month of November, with excess mortality in all five weeks. Mortality was 12 percent higher than expected.

Among people under 65, estimated mortality in week 48 stood at 450. This is higher than expected and there was excess mortality. Mortality in this age group was slightly higher than expected for the month of November. There were excess deaths in three of the five weeks. Mortality in November was 7 percent higher than expected.

COVID-19 mortality known up to July inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on reports on the number of deaths received daily from the municipalities by CBS. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased persons up to and including July 2022. According to CBS figures, 45,470 thousand people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and July 2022. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had an influenza epidemic for 13 consecutive weeks starting in mid-March.

Estimate for week 48

The figures for week 48 of 2022 are estimates, based on the assumption that 82 percent of all death records was received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 48 on Friday 16 December. The figures will be more complete by then.
