The estimated number of deaths in the last week of October (week 43. i.e. 24 to 30 October inclusive) stands at 3,350. This is approximately the same as in the previous week (3,327) but higher than expected for this period. Over the whole month of October, there were nearly 1,800 (16 percent) more deaths than expected, with excess mortality in all four weeks. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 65 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

October’s mortality figures cover four weeks, i.e. week 40 to 43 (3 October to 30 October) inclusive. In each of these weeks, mortality was higher than expected and fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. In September, still three of the four weeks had excess mortality. Each week of that month had nearly 200 more deaths than expected; in October, there were more than twice as many, up to almost 450 excess deaths per week.

Excess deaths in October mainly long-term care recipients

In week 43, mortality declined slightly compared to the previous week among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, mortality increased slightly, based on the estimate. There were nearly 1,300 deaths among long-term care recipients and 2,050 among the rest of the population. This was higher than expected for both groups, there was excess mortality.
Excess mortality among long-term care recipients stood at 1,000 in October, With excess mortality in all four weeks. There were approximately 24 percent more deaths than expected. Among the rest of the population, there were around 750 excess deaths in October. Likewise, mortality fell outside the interval of usual fluctuations in all four weeks and nearly 10 percent higher than expected.

Elevated mortality among over-65s in October

At just under 1,900, mortality among people aged 80 and over was slightly higher in week 43 than in the preceding three weeks. This is nearly 300 more than expected for this week, i.e. excess deaths. Over the full month of October, there were approximately 1,150 more deaths than expected among people aged 80 and over. Excess mortality was recorded in all four weeks at approximately 18 percent.
Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 1,080 deaths were recorded in week 43, around 175 more than expected. Nearly 600 excess deaths were estimated among this group over the whole month of October, with excess mortality in all four weeks. Mortality was 16 percent higher than expected.
Among people under 65, estimated mortality in week 43 stood at 385, slightly lower than expected. Mortality in this age group was slightly higher than expected for the month of October. None of the weeks had excess mortality.

Excess mortality in October mainly among the female population

In week 43, there were an estimated 1,600 deaths among men and nearly 1,750 among women. This was higher than expected, resulting in excess mortality for both sexes. In the whole of October, there were approximately 750 more deaths than expected among men. Among women, mortality was nearly 1,050 above the expected level for October. There was excess mortality in all four weeks, but it was relatively higher among women.

COVID-19 mortality known until June inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased persons up to and including June 2022. According to CBS figures, 44,760 thousand people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and May 2022. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had an influenza epidemic for 13 consecutive weeks, starting in mid-March.

Estimate for week 43

The figures for week 43 of 2022 are estimates, based on the assumption that 82 percent of all death records was received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 43 on Friday 11 November. The figures will be more complete by then.
