Overweight
The questions on height and body weight are presented to all survey participants. Questions relate to height in cm without shoes and body weight in kg without clothes. Pregnant women are asked about body weight prior to pregnancy.
Underweight and overweight
The degree of underweight or overweight is measured by the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is the quotient of a person’s weight in kilograms and the square of their height in metres (kg/m2). For adults aged 20 years and over, the following criteria apply:
- Underweight: BMI < 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI >= 18.5 and < 25.0
- Overweight: BMI >= 25.0
Moderate overweight: BMI >= 25.0 and < 30.0
Severe overweight: BMI >= 30.0
For persons under the age of 20, other thresholds apply.
Underweight
Percentage of persons with a BMI of less than 18.5 kg/m2. For persons under the age of 20, other thresholds apply.
Normal weight
Percentage of persons with a BMI between 18.5 and 25.0 kg/m2. For persons under the age of 20, other thresholds apply.
Overweight
Percentage of persons with a BMI of 25.0 kg/m2 or more. For persons under the age of 20, other thresholds apply.
Degree of overweight
Moderate overweight: Percentage of persons with a BMI between 25.0 kg/m2 and 30.0 kg/m2. For persons under the age of 18, other thresholds apply.
Severe overweight: Percentage of persons with a BMI of 30.0 kg/m2 or more. For persons under the age of 18, other thresholds apply.
In this news release, the group for underweight and normal weight has been merged into the group for no overweight. In 2021, 1 percent of the adult population were underweight.
