Excess mortality in all weeks of July

In the last week of July (week 30, 25 to 31 July 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,200. This is slightly higher than in the previous week (3,144) and more than was expected for this period. There were altogether 1,350 more deaths than expected in July, with excess mortality in all of the weeks. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 80 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

The mortality figures for July cover four weeks, namely weeks 27 through 30 (4 to 31 July 2022 inclusive). In each of these weeks, mortality was higher than expected and fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. Excess mortality was also recorded in all weeks of June. In that month, on average almost 225 more deaths than expected were recorded each week; by July, this had increased to 340.

Excess mortality mainly among long-term care recipients in July

In week 30, mortality was at more or less the same level as in the previous week among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, mortality also remained the same, based on the estimate. There were over 1,250 deaths among long-term care recipients and 1,950 among the rest of the population. This was more than expected for both groups and resulted in excess mortality.
In the whole of July, 800 more deaths than expected were recorded among long-term care recipients. Excess mortality was recorded in each consecutive week of July. Among the rest of the population, there were around 550 more deaths in July than expected. Mortality fell within the range of usual fluctuations in each week except in week 30.

Elevated mortality in July mainly among over-80s

Among the population aged 80 and over, mortality was up further in week 30, with the estimated total exceeding 1,800 deaths. This is approximately 300 more than expected for this period. In the whole of July, there were over 900 more deaths than expected among the over-80s. The age group showed excess mortality in each consecutive week of July.
Among people aged 65 to 79, there were an estimated 970 deaths in week 30, i.e. 100 more than expected. An estimated 350 excess deaths were recorded among this group over the whole month of July, with excess mortality in three of the four weeks.
Among people under 65, mortality in week 30 was estimated at 400, slightly more than expected. This age group had over 100 more deaths than expected for the month of July. Only in week 28 there was excess mortality.

COVID-19 mortality known up to March inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including March 2022. According to the latest CBS figures, 43,245 thousand people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and March 2022. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had an influenza epidemic for 13 consecutive weeks, starting in mid-March.

Estimate for week 30

The figures for week 30 of 2022 are estimates, based on the assumption that 82 percent of all death records was received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 30 on Friday 12 August. The figures will be more complete by then.
