Excess mortality in all weeks of June

In the last week of June (week 26: 27 June to 3 July 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,050. This is slightly less than in the previous week (3,090) and more than the expected number for this period. There were altogether 1,150 more deaths than expected in June, with excess mortality in all of the weeks. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 65 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

Mortality figures for June cover a period of five weeks: week 22 to 26 inclusive (i.e. from 30 May to 3 July 2022). In each of these weeks, mortality was higher than expected and fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. In May, there was excess mortality in three of the four weeks. That month, the weekly number of excess deaths was 200 on average; this increased slightly to 225 in June.

Excess mortality in June mainly among long-term care recipients

In week 26, mortality was more or less the same as in the previous week among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, mortality also remained the same, as based on the estimate. There were more than 1,150 deaths among long-term care recipients, more than expected and resulting in excess mortality. Among the rest of the population, nearly 1,900 deaths were recorded. This did not represent excess mortality but it was more than expected.
In the whole of June, over 650 more deaths than expected were recorded among long-term care recipients. There was excess mortality in the last three weeks of June. In June, there were almost 500 more deaths than expected among the rest of the population. Mortality fell within the range of usual fluctuations in each week. There was no excess mortality.

Elevated mortality in June mainly among over-65s

Among the population aged 80 and over, mortality continued to rise in week 26, to more than 1,700 deaths (estimated). This is approximately 200 more than expected for this period. In the whole of June, over 550 more deaths than expected were recorded among the over-80s. In the last three weeks of June, there was excess mortality in this age group.
Among people aged 65 to 79, an estimated 900 deaths were recorded in week 26, slightly more than expected. 450 more deaths than expected were estimated among this group over the whole month of June, with excess mortality in four of the five weeks.
Among people under 65, mortality in week 26 was estimated at 425, slightly more than expected and just outside the interval of usual fluctuations. This age group had approximately 150 more deaths than expected in June; there was some excess mortality in the last week, based on the estimate.

COVID-19 mortality known up to February inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to February 2022 inclusive. According to these figures, between March 2020 and March 2022, altogether 41,745 deaths were due to COVID-19. Aside from the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an influenza epidemic in the Netherlands for 13 weeks as of mid-March 2022.

Estimate for week 26

The figures for week 26 of 2022 are estimates that are based on the assumption that 82 percent of all death records were received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 26 on Friday 15 July. The figures will be more complete by then.
