Excess mortality in May, except in the last week

In the last week of May (week 21, 23 to 29 May 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 2,850. This is less than in the previous week (3,020) and slightly more than the expected number for this period. There were altogether approximately 700 more deaths than expected, with excess mortality in three out of the four weeks. Mortality was mainly elevated among long-term care recipients and over-65s. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

The mortality figures for May cover the past four weeks, i.e. weeks 18 through 21 (2 to 29 May 2022 inclusive). In weeks 18 up to and including 20, the number of deaths was higher than expected  and fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. Excess mortality was recorded in all weeks of April. That month, on average almost 400 more deaths than expected were recorded each week; by May, this had increased to over 150.

Excess mortality in May among-term care recipients in particular

In week 21, relative to the previous week, mortality declined among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, mortality declined slightly, according to the estimate. There were approximately 1,150 deaths among long-term care users (150 more than expected) and 1,800 deaths among the rest of the population (more or less as expected).
In the whole of May, over 400 more deaths than expected were recorded among long-term care recipients. There was excess mortality in two of the weeks. Among the rest of the population, there were more than 250 more deaths than expected in May. Mortality fell within the range of usual fluctuations in each week. There was no excess mortality.

Elevated mortality in May among over-65s in particular

Among the population aged 80 and over, mortality continued to decline in week 21, to just under 1,550 deaths (estimated). This is more or less as expected for this period. Among the over-80s, there were nearly 300 more deaths than expected for the month of May. This age group showed no excess mortality in any of the weeks.
Among people aged 65 to 79, an estimated 900 deaths were recorded in week 21, slightly more than expected. According to the estimate, in May 300 more deaths were expected were recorded among the population aged 65 to 79 years; there were two weeks with excess mortality.
Among people under 65, mortality in week 21 was estimated at 400, approximately 75 more than expected. More than 100 deaths than expected were recorded in this age group, with excess mortality in the first week of May.

COVID-19 mortality known up to January inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including January 2022. According to these figures, 40,679 people died of COVID-19 between March 2020 and January 2022. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had an influenza epidemic for 13 consecutive weeks, starting in mid-March.

Estimate for week 21

The figures for week 21 of 2022 are estimates <link> that are based on the assumption that 83 percent of all death records were received by CBS. As a consequence of delayed transmissions around the long weekend of Ascension Day, this time the percentage of records received may be somewhat lower. The estimate may therefore be slightly lower than usual. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 21 on Friday 10 June. The figures will be more complete by then.
