Excess mortality in April, not anymore in early May

In the first week of May 2022 (week 18, i.e. 2 to 8 May inclusive), an estimated 3,000 deaths were recorded. This is slightly more than in the previous week (3,090) and approximately 150 more than expected. Approximately 1,850 more deaths than expected were recorded in April; there was excess mortality in four of the five weeks. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 65 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

Mortality figures for April cover a period of five weeks: week 13 to 17 inclusive (i.e. from 28 March to 1 May 2022). Weeks 13 up to and including week 16 had higher than expected mortality, with the number of deaths falling outside the usual range of fluctuations, i.e. there was excess mortality. In January and February, mortality was lower than expected for eight consecutive weeks; in March, it subsequently rose beyond the expected level. That month, on average almost 150 excess deaths were recorded each week; by April, this had increased to over 350 per week on average.

Excess mortality in April among-term care recipients in particular

Based on the estimate, in week 18 mortality remained roughly unchanged from the previous week among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Mortality declined slightly among the rest of the population. There were approximately 1,200 deaths among long-term care users (150 more than expected) and 1,800 deaths among the rest of the population, more or less as expected.
In April, nearly 1,150 more long-term care recipients died than expected for that month. There was excess mortality for three weeks. Among the rest of the population, there were around 700 more deaths in April than expected. There was a small margin of excess mortality.

Elevated mortality in April among over-65s in particular

Among the population aged 80 and over, mortality continued to decline in week 18, to just under 1,700 deaths (estimated). This is slightly more than expected for this period. In April, nearly 1,300 more over-80s died than expected for that month. There was excess mortality in four of the five weeks.
Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 950 deaths were recorded in week 18, over 50 more than expected. According to this estimate, mortality was just below the excess level. Over the whole of April, more than 400 deaths were expected among the population aged 65 to 79 years; there were two weeks with excess mortality.
Among the population under 65, week 18 mortality was estimated at 400, i.e. more or less the expected number. In April, around 150 more deaths than expected were recorded in this age group, with two weeks showing excess mortality.

COVID-19 mortality known up to January inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including January 2022. According to these figures, altogether 40,679 people died due to COVID-19 in the period March 2020 to January 2022 inclusive. According to RIVM, there has been an influenza epidemic in the Netherlands since 16 March 2022, aside from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Estimate for week 18

The figures for week 18 of 2022 are estimates that are based on 83 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 18 on Friday 20 May. The figures will be more complete by then.
